Introduction

The impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly severe, leading to air pollution, unpredictable weather patterns, increased energy demands, and natural disasters. Moreover, the declining interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects among primary and secondary school students worldwide poses another concern. In response to these issues, the Heat-Cool initiative has emerged as a powerful tool to foster climate literacy and ignite a passion for STEM education. By combining interactive learning and thermal imaging technology, Heat-Cool aims to empower students in their understanding of climate change and its consequences.

Understanding the Problem

Climate change has wreaked havoc globally, resulting in devastating natural disasters that have claimed lives and caused extensive economic damage. Over the period from 1998 to 2017, approximately 43.5% of global losses in lives and 74.5% of economic damages were attributed to these disasters. Addressing climate change requires widespread education and increased climate literacy among the population. Additionally, the decline in interest in STEM subjects among young learners poses a challenge to developing future leaders capable of finding sustainable solutions.

The 'Heat-Cool' Solution

The Heat-Cool initiative seeks to tackle these pressing issues through a playful and interactive approach to learning. By leveraging thermal imaging technology, the programme aims to stimulate student’s interest in STEM subjects and foster a deeper understanding of climate change and its drivers. The initiative adopts a co-creation methodology, involving parents, teachers, researchers, and students themselves in the formulation of an engaging climate education programme.

Thermal Imaging in Action

At the core of the Heat-Cool initiative lies the use of handheld thermal imaging cameras, which enable students to explore the fundamental principles of thermodynamics and the heating and cooling processes of objects in their surroundings. By visualising long-wave electromagnetic radiation in the infrared spectrum, thermal imaging produces real-time thermograms, providing a vivid representation of heat transfer between objects and the environment. This innovative technology bridges the gap between abstract scientific concepts and tangible visualisations, enhancing students' comprehension of complex climate-related phenomena.

Our platform has been designed for educators and students. It offers a plethora of resources and support to help schools implement the Heat-Cool activity effectively. Key features of the platform include:

Practical Sessions: Teachers can schedule interactive practical sessions for students, integrating thermal imaging activities into their curriculum.

Quizzes and Explanatory Materials: Engaging quizzes and explanatory materials on climate change and its impacts aid students in enhancing their knowledge.

Training on Thermal Imaging Devices: Comprehensive information on how to effectively use thermal imaging devices is provided to both teachers and students.
